Santa’s visit kicks off 12 Days of Christmas in Snowflake and Taylor, Ariz.
It’s starting to feel a lot like Christmas in Snowflake and Taylor, Arizona. The 15th Annual 12 Days of Christmas kicked off on Dec. 1 with the town lighting and Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the historic Freeman home in Snowflake.
“Santa usually comes in on the fire truck and then we have Mr. and Mrs. Santa [sitting] on the front porch of the [Freeman] historic home,” said Charlotte Hatch, executive director of the Snowflake/Taylor Chamber of Commerce. “Kids can go through the line to see Mr. and Mrs. Santa and we give them goodie bags.”
Meeting Santa and the lighting of the tree weren’t the only highlights of the opening night. Nativities from around the world were on display for people to view inside the Snowflake Social Hall.
The rest of the Christmas celebrations that last through Dec. 13 will include a variety of performances put on by the various churches in the community as well as by students in the nearby schools. People can even put on their dancing shoes and head to the Snowflake/Taylor Grand Ball or do you still need to start your holiday shopping?
The Christmas Market, which is open Dec. 5-6 at the OLS Community Center, has a variety of homemade and handmade items for sale. This time of year really makes that small hometown feeling even stronger.
“It’s where a lot of families like to come back home and visit grandma, grandpa, aunts and uncles because it’s that low pace,” Hatch said. “A lot of times we get snow on that night, so you just have that true Christmas feeling.”
It also opens the doors for people who haven’t come to the area to not only experience the holiday season in Snowflake and Taylor, but to get a chance to check out other nearby towns with day trips, as well.
“We’re close to the White Mountains to be able to come up to an event here at night, then drive on up to the ski run [Sunrise Park Resort] or over to Springerville or whatever,” Hatch said.
