The White Mountain Apache Tribe

The word "Apache" is derived from the Yuma word for "fighting-men." Indigenous to the southwest, the Apaches were known throughout history for their superior strategy, strength, and courage in times of conflict. Upon the arrival of European settlers from the 17th to 19th centuries, the Apache carved their place in the history of the old west through such famous tribal leaders as Cochise and Geronimo.

Today, the White Mountain Apache Tribe, residents to the Fort Apache Reservation, are an integral part of the White Mountains. While maintaining their traditional and social structure, the Apache have deep spiritual ties to the beauty of the forested White Mountains. Recent changes in the socio-economic structure of the tribe finds them as hosts to some of the most popular attractions in the region, most notably historic Fort Apache, Hon-Dah Resort and Casino, and Sunrise Ski Resort, one of the premiere skiing facilities.

The Apache Office of Tourism, located in Fort Apache, can provide information on events such as ceremonial dances, the Hon-Dah Pow Wow, and the White Mountain Apache Fair and Rodeo. These events, along with the natural beauty of the reservation, provide interest and cultural education for the entire family.

Apache Cultural Center and Museum

Originally established in 1969, the White Mountain Apache Cultural Center stands as a monument to the Tribe's historical resiliency and ongoing commitment to celebrate and perpetuate Apache heritage. The Cultural Center serves as a repository for the Tribe's cultural heritage through the preservation of oral histories, archival materials and objects of cultural, historical and artistic significance to the White Mountain Apache people.
